Royston, 13th September 2007, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London is trialling a ward-based labelling system from Episys, the global information technology solutions and services company, in a bid to reduce patient waiting times and make prescription dispensing more patient-oriented.
The Pharmacy department is using Episys’ Ultimate solution, combining labelling software, label templates and local printers to enable staff to create prescription labels on a PC for immediate over labelling onto patients’ existing prescription containers.
This process removes the need for most prescriptions to be sent to the dispensary to be filled, as most of the work can now be done on the ward. Before they leave hospital, more patients will also now be able to get detailed information on their drugs from the pharmacist or pharmacy technician at their bedside.
Raliat Onatade, Deputy Director of Pharmacy, Clinical Services at King’s College Hospital, said, “We expect the new system to reduce patient waiting times and improve throughput of patients. We believe that the system will also enable us to provide a more personal service to patients.”
Peter Lewis, Episys Marketing Director said, “We are delighted to have the opportunity to demonstrate to Kings College Hospital our capabilities in this area. They join a number of other NHS customers already enjoying the benefits of the Episys ultimate solution.”
